GOLF PRACTICE VOCABULARY

  • BLOCK PRACTICE: The repetition of hitting the same club at the same target.  What most people do.
  • RANDOM PRACTICE: What people should do.  Selecting a different club or target on a regular basis.
  • VARIABLE PRACTICE: Hitting different shots/clubs to the same target. Working on “different solutions” to get the ball from point A to point B.
  • GUIDANCE DEVICES: Any device which may be used during practice to assist with learning.  e. alignment sticks.  Be careful to not become too dependent, they will not be there when you play.
  • AIM SMALL, MISS SMALL: When practicing and playing narrow your focus to a very small target.  Your body will respond to the small target.
  • GOLDDILOCKS EFFECT: Your ability to learn how to judge your swing based on, “Not too hard, Not to soft, but Just right”.
  • LEARNING VELOCITY: The speed at which a person learns how to do something.
  • CHALLENGE POINTS: Making a lie more difficult, when you practice.  Side hill, uphill, downhill, into the wind etc…
  • PRACTICE CALCULATOR SCORECARD (PCS): The single sheet form I hand out to all of clients which shows commitment to getting better.  Practice is “the final frontier” to improvement.
  • RETENTION TESTING: Arranging test(s) which you can measure your success. Goal is to achieve 70% success rate.  Once achieved make the test more difficult. I.e. what percent of 4’ putts do you make.
  • PRACTICE UNDER PRESSURE: Creating situations when you practice that put a player under pressure. “I have to make 6 4’ putts in a row before I leave the practice green”.
  • TRANSFERABILITY: Your ability or inability to transfer your successful practice to the course.
  • UNREALISTIC ENVIRONMENT: Constantly hitting balls from a perfect lie or from a mat.  This is not how we play golf.
  • MUSCLE MEMORY: DOES NOT EXIST! Your muscles do not have memory.  You train your brain to “FIRE” your muscles in the proper sequence.
  • SCHOLLS FOOT POWDER: Spray on clubface and let dry.  Hit several shot and see where you are hitting the ball.   Centerness of contact is the goal.
  • REPETITION TRAINING: The complete process.  Repetition is the mother of skill as long as you repeat the entire process.
  • BANDWIDTH: Maximum misses right, left, long, short of target.  The higher the skill level the smaller the diameter. Use as a benchmark to show improvement.
  • LAYERING: No club and no ball. 2. With club and no ball.  3. With club and ball.
